IRS Notices Causing Confusion
May 12, 2026We have had several clients receive what appears to be a notice from the IRS indicating that the taxpayer is due a refund but the IRS needs bank account information in order to send the funds.
The notice has a QR code in the middle of the page and asks you to scan that and enter your bank account information. When you scan the code – it takes you to a site that looks a lot like the IRS website but it is not.
If you receive one of these notices – please DO NOT provide your bank account information. The scammers are looking to access your account to steal funds.
Luckily, our clients all owed with their returns so they questioned the refund letter. One even called the IRS and was told that the IRS had not reached out about a refund and not to provide any information.
If you think you are truly due a refund – go directly to the IRS website and check the Where’s My Refund tab, or call the IRS directly. DO NOT use numbers provided in a notice with a QR code.
